Europe’s green transition agenda is rewriting the rules of trade. Recycled content ratios, waste management documentation and carbon footprint were once considered “added value” topics; today they are preconditions for purchasing decisions. One of the places where this transformation is most visible is the EcoMondo fair.
As Gökçe Trade, we will attend the EcoMondo fair to be held in Rimini on 3-6 November 2026 by special invitation of the Italian State. All fair participation, flight and accommodation expenses are covered by the inviting institution.
In this article we share what the fair means for the industry, and what it takes to turn a fair participation into real commercial results.
What Is EcoMondo?
EcoMondo is an international fair held in Rimini, Italy, bringing together companies operating in waste management, recycling technologies, water treatment, bioeconomy and the circular economy.
Main areas covered by the fair:
| Area | Content |
|---|---|
| Waste Management | Collection, sorting and disposal technologies |
| Recycling | Mechanical and chemical recycling systems |
| Material Trade | Supply and demand for recycled raw materials |
| Water and Treatment | Industrial water management solutions |
| Bioeconomy | Value generation from organic waste |
| Green Technology | Energy efficiency and carbon reduction |
Commercially, the most valuable aspect of the fair is that it gathers the entire chain under one roof: waste producers, recycling facilities, technology providers, raw material buyers and end users all meet in the same halls.
Why This Fair, Why Now?
1. Recycled content is now mandatory in Europe
European Union regulations on packaging and single-use plastics are moving towards making the use of certain proportions of recycled material compulsory. This permanently raises demand for high-quality, documentable recycled raw materials.
2. The supply side is not sufficiently organised
While demand rises rapidly, the number of suppliers able to deliver consistent quality and regular shipments remains limited. Precisely for this reason, the role of trading companies capable of matching producers with buyers is growing.
3. Face-to-face contact is still decisive
In recycled raw material trade, samples, analysis reports and trust are critical. The first step in building that relationship is often taken at a fair.
Getting Results: A Three-Stage Preparation
Fair participation does not begin on the day the stand opens. In our experience, participations that produce results share one common trait: the process is planned in three stages.
Stage 1 — Before the Fair (6-8 weeks)
- Build a target list. Identify in advance the companies you want to meet from the exhibitor list. Meeting 30 correct companies is always more productive than meeting 300.
- Book appointments in advance. Arriving on the day with an empty calendar is the most common mistake. Send exhibitors a short, clear email 3-4 weeks beforehand.
- Prepare your technical document. Product specification, analysis reports, capacity information and price range — all on a single page, in English, printable.
- Do not forget samples. In recycled raw material trade, the sample is the strongest argument.
Stage 2 — During the Fair
- Record every meeting. Company name, contact person, product of interest, volume discussed and the next step. Take notes right after each meeting rather than trying to reconstruct them at the hotel in the evening.
- Ask qualifying questions early. “Which product, in what volume, at what frequency do you buy?” reveals within the first five minutes whether you are talking to a genuine buyer.
- Walk the competition. Gathering field information on price levels, presentation styles and the certificates competitors highlight is the cheapest market research a fair offers.
Stage 3 — After the Fair (first 10 days)
This is the stage where fairs lose the most value. The majority of collected business cards are never followed up.
- Respond to all meetings within 72 hours.
- Reference a concrete detail from the conversation in your email (“we discussed PC regrind moisture content in Rimini”).
- If you are in a position to quote, share the price range in your first message.
- Record contacts that did not convert as well; this is how next year’s target list matures.
Participation Cost and Return
The cost of attending a fair typically consists of the following items:
| Item | Share |
|---|---|
| Stand space and construction | 40-55% |
| Flights and accommodation | 20-30% |
| Promotional material and samples | 10-15% |
| Staff and logistics | 10-15% |
The return on this cost usually materialises not in the first year but in the second and third, because in international trade an average of 4-9 months passes between first contact and first shipment. Fair participation should be planned as a multi-year market investment, not a one-off marketing expense.
State support schemes and invited-participation programmes change this equation considerably. When expenses are covered, the payback period shortens directly.
What We Aim For at EcoMondo 2026
Our focus areas throughout the fair:
- Opening new buyer channels in Europe on behalf of our partners supplying recycled polymers
- Meeting producers supplying products compliant with circular economy standards
- Expanding our sourcing base in plastic processing and recycling technologies
- Meeting existing partners face to face to plan for 2027
